jQUERY: What is it?

“Write less, Do more, JavaScript library”

JQuery is a cross platform JavaScript library aimed to simplify the client side scripting of HTML.

Client side scripting refers to those computer programs that are executed via those operations designated to certain computers, assigned to provide services to other computers.

It makes many things easier such as HTML documentation, animation, event handling etc. And it has transformed the lives of thousands of people the way they write JavaScript.

HISTORY

First stable release of jQuery was in August 2006 with the version 1.0. After that 12 more versions invented. The last being 2.1 released in January 24, 2014 with its latest update being released on 1st May of this year.

jQuery was released at BarCamp NYC (which is primarily affiliated with the web and technology) by John Mesig. And currently it is expanded by a team of coordinators led by Dave Methvin.

Among Protype, jsPHP and other JavaScript libraries, jQuery is the most popular JavaScript library used today.

 

ADVANTAGES

Despite of being a newbie, jQuery has been the most powerful tool in the web development department. It is a blessing for the web developers due to its advantages listed below.

Ø Easy Use:

It is very easy and effortless. And it provides condensed syntax of even harder and complicated tasks.

Ø Tutorials:

jQuery depicts a series of tutorials to bolster the beginner, enabling him to get along the bus of JavaScript.

Ø Immense Library:

jQuery has an immense library of codes. Coding and other tasks are pretty simple and accessible, keeping out non-essential features.

 

DISADVANTAGES

Despite of being a pro and a leader among its competitors, it still highlights certain disadvantages such as:

Ø Required File Size:

jQuery JavaScript files need to be 25-100kb in size which is pretty small, thus limiting its efficiency.

Ø Restricted Functionality:

Though jQuery contains an enormous library for the aid yet sometimes its functionality seems to be restricted.

Despite of understanding the disadvantages and drawbacks of jQuery, it is still not a double edged sword and undoubtedly a winner. While making use of JavaScript libraries, it is benevolent for the web developing kind.
